Wednesday, August 01, 2007 Strength - Do u have it or not?
Its my very fers experience dealing with special children. Totally diff from what I have done with Mendaki a few years back. Throughout the training, I was introduced to the types of conditions which the children are having. I never knew that there are many kinds of cerebral palsy, some of which are of extreme degrees. What striked me was that the trainer who's called Melissa was giggling here n there.. having this happy-go-lucky kind of attitude. She later brought us to the canteen and it happened tat the students were having a break so the place was filled up. Some of them greeted us in their own ways.. others were oblivious to us newcomers.. Melissa introduced us to Raymond who's in charge of the Day Care students. He, striked me too. Another easy going individual who displayed patience and passion in his work which is not easy. He began to tell us about his group of students.. about their conditions and all. We are to help him out once we decide to come in. After their break.. the students moved back to their classrooms.. at least those who could. The ones in wheelchairs, which were most of them had to be assisted back and there was one which i was intriguely observing.. he was not in wheelchair but he has to use this walking aid to support him. Since he did not need to be pushed, he was left alone to walk back. At first I tot he was one of the more fortunate ones.. Only later that I realised the difficulty he faces. Each step he takes tires him out. Hes overweight and i could see that it was making his movement difficult esp with the walking aid. He didnt give up tho.. with no one's help, he reached the classroom 10 minutes later.. a walk which could be done in 1 min by a healthy child. My heart went out to him.. Other people dread walking.. even to the bus stop.. even to the kitchen to take a glass of water.. but these acts are never taken for granted by students at SCAS. If you think about it.. everyone faces difficulties in life. The difference is whether you continue with your mission or hail the white flag. These kids are not given any choices but to continue life no matter what. They cant give up coz simply that option is not there.. So they continue fighting. Against all odds. Us? The fortunate ones? We hide and run away whenever times are hard and come up with 1001 excuses to justify our actions.. When you give up, means you quit.. There's nothing to explain. Remember tho...Nothing comes easy... Nothing comes to you on a silver plate.. Maybe at times its good not to have options.. coz thats when you'll continue your journey no matter what. Dear Allah... give me strength for I can only rely on myself.. Amin.
